Advice from the Experts
Permanent Makeup
When considering permanent cosmetics there are a few questions you should ask during your consultation with a micropigmentation technician. If the technician does not do a consultation you should find someone who will educate you on the process. In order to be confident in the technician you choose you should look at their portfolio, go over the pigments, discuss why colors will fade, and post care instructions. It is important for you and the technician doing your permanent makeup to be on the same page of what you want and what to expect with the process, healing, downtime, and long term care.
The most important part of the procedure is the person who will do the actual tattooing of your permanent makeup. You should go to someone who has had training through a credible school. There are many technicians performing permanent cosmetics who have been taught by watching someone else perform the treatment and have never had a formal certifiable training. There are many things that can go wrong and the person tattooing you should have a good understanding of your medical history, your ethnic background (skin tones and how it heals), your face shape etc.
Another important factor is the pigment and equipment being used. Most pigments can turn color over time. You may leave with beautiful brown eyebrows, but within a month or year, that same brown eyebrow can turn orange, pink, green, blue or purple. Make sure the micropigmentation technician does a smear test so you can see the underlying tone of the pigment on YOUR skin tone. What may look good on one person, will not look the same on another. The pigments should be formulated to counteract color changes, but cheaper pigments are not.
As far as equipment, if it is not disposable, make sure you know how the machine is cleaned after each client and that every needle used has been properly sterilized. If it is disposable take note that it is actually disposed of in a red sharp’s container and not reused on yourself or another client. When a technician is using a reusable needle, it should be properly cleaned and autoclaved to prevent the spread of disease. Most needles today do come in disposable form and are disposed of after each use. This ensures that you have a new sharp needle that will imbed the pigment properly and evenly but most importantly, it is sterile.
Permanent makeup, when done properly can be the best investment you can make. Just follow the guidelines I have provided and enjoy years of maintenance free makeup! Enjoy!
